  • Allweather Wood Offers Unparalleled Selection of Preservative Treated Lumber

Largest waterborne preservative treated lumber manufacturer in the Western U.S.

Santa Rosa, CA (March 26, 2019) – As the largest waterborne preservative treated lumber manufacturer in the Western U.S., Allweather Wood knows a thing or two about long-lasting building materials.

“Allweather Wood began operating in 1985 with our first preservative treated lumber facility in Washougal, Washington”, says Blair Buchanan, Executive VP. “Since then, we have grown to five preservative treatment locations and three distribution centers across four states.”

For architects, builders, contractors, and developers in today’s challenging building environment, selecting the best possible building materials for the job is imperative. No matter the project or location, the natural elements are of particular concern.

“As we’ve seen over the past few years, the Western U.S. faces everything from high fire danger to severe drought to catastrophic flooding―sometimes all in the same 12-month period. It is unpredictable to say the least,” adds Buchanan.

This unpredictability is the reason Allweather Wood continually seeks out and brings to market the best new products to meet customer needs. Offering an unparalleled selection of preservative treated lumber and plywood products, Allweather Wood is ready for whatever nature brings. Wood species treated include Douglas-fir, Hem fir, and Southern Yellow Pine.

    Above Ground

Allweather Wood has the right preservative lumber products for above ground building applications, including appearance grade decking, fencing, dimensional, substructure- and framing members, timbers, and more.

    Ground Contact

Soil, moisture, insects, and corrosive minerals are an ever-present challenge for ground contact building applications. Allweather Wood manufactures preservative treated lumber and plywood for many ground contact applications, including structural timbers and dimensional lumber that dig deep for long-lasting performance.

    Fire Retardant Treated Wood (FRTW)

Even when sprinklers are mandatory, the use of FRTW can further increase safety and reduce fire insurance rates. D-Blaze® lumber and plywood from Allweather Wood are preservative treated deep into the wood, unlike the superficial protection offered by coatings. D-Blaze® products are available in a variety of species and dimensions to meet the specifications necessary for building codes in the Western U.S. D-Blaze® also carries an industry best 50-year limited warranty.

    Industrial

Whether it’s a structural ground contact project, freshwater pier, or saltwater project, Allweather Wood has the right preservative, and product to meet the building code specifications and requirements needed for industrial applications.

Many of the preservatives used in the Allweather Wood preservative process have achieved green building recognition, while maintaining superior performance in a wide variety of applications. Allweather Wood maintains Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C013133) chain-of-custody certification for our manufacturing and distribution facilities. FSC certification enables consumers to make environmentally responsible choices when purchasing wood from retail lumber yards and home improvement centers.

  • Allweather Wood Offers Fire Retardant Treated Lumber: A Greener Way to Slow the Burn

D-Blaze® preservative is a sustainable, effective, and durable treatment

Santa Rosa, CA (March 26, 2019) – Allweather Wood, a leading manufacturer and distributor of preservative treated lumber, offers fire retardant treated (FRT) lumber and plywood products that are highly effective at controlling the spread of flame and smoke, increasing evacuation time and potentially reducing damages and repair costs caused by fire.

“Buildings have always been designed to protect and safeguard the people and things that will occupy them,” says Blair Buchanan, Executive VP.  “One of the constant threats to a building’s integrity has been fire. The development of fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) allows building owners to meet important building code requirements sustainably, and economically.”

Fire retardant treating creates a chemical barrier that restricts the flame spread along the wood. Allweather Wood uses the D-Blaze® preservative, manufactured by Viance, an industry leader in the development of advanced building material solutions that improve the performance and durability of wood products for sustainable building.

The preservative is not just on the wood surface, but infused deep into the wood to provide durable, safe, and long-lasting protection. The treating process utilizes pressure that forces the fire retardant into the wood fiber. While wood that has been treated with a fire retardant cannot claim to be non-combustible, the retardant reacts within a burning environment to slow the speed of the burn and limit the spread of fire.

Allweather Wood products treated with D-Blaze are acceptable for use in sensitive environments such as schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, and multi-family construction projects. These products are GREENGUARD® Gold certified for meeting some of the world’s most comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. Coupled with the sustainability of well-managed forestlands, a renewable resource, the benefits of FRT lumber and plywood make these products a great choice for green building projects.

D-Blaze lumber and plywood from Allweather Wood can be used in the following, interior applications:

    • Beams
    • Blocking
    • Floor joists
    • Roofs and attics
    • Steps and stairways
    • Walls and wall assemblies

D-Blaze from Allweather Wood is backed by a 50-Year Limited Warranty.

  • Humboldt Redwood Decking is the Local Choice for California Builders

Redwood is one of nature’s best building materials

SANTA ROSA, CA (March 26, 2019) – Competition in the decking space has never been fiercer. With man-made decking manufacturers popping up seemingly overnight, offering too many product formulations, colors, and sizes to count, deciding which decking to specify or install can be a real challenge. Luckily for builders and other specifiers in California, the best decking material is a local one. Humboldt Redwood, the leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood decking, elaborates.

“Humboldt Redwood is one of nature’s finest and strongest building materials with shear strength up to five times greater than plastic or composite decking,” explains Jessica Hewitt, Director of Marketing. “But it has always been its natural beauty that has set it apart—nature got it right the first time. The beauty of redwood is legendary.”

    Redwood Benefits

Much lighter weight than plastics, composites, or tropical hardwoods, Humboldt Redwood can be easily cut, sawed, drilled, and nailed with regular woodworking tools. Yet for all that lightness, Humboldt Redwood stands up to the elements with natural durability. Properly maintained, a Humboldt Redwood deck could last anywhere from 25-40 years.

Dimensionally stable, Humboldt Redwood resists warping, cupping, and checking, all while staying comfortable to bare feet even on the hottest, sunniest days. Redwood has also been thoroughly tested and conforms to ASTM E-84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials Class B flame spread. Redwood decking Construction Common and better grades are approved for use in California’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas without restriction as defined in California Building Code Chapter 7A, Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure.

Humboldt Redwood products are grown and harvested in a responsible, ethical manner with an eye for long-term sustainability. Redwood logs are harvested at a level consistently below the forests’ annual growth rate and Humboldt Redwood replants trees annually; two methods that ensure Humboldt Redwood will be a renewable resource for years to come. And, unlike plastic and composite decking products, Humboldt Redwood can be recycled throughout its useful life. It is also biodegradable and will not end up in landfills.

    Redwood Deck Grades

Redwood decking is typically offered in heartwood and sapwood grades. Within the heartwood and sapwood grades there are further designations for architectural and garden grades. Detailed redwood grade specifications may be found in the 2019 Standard Specifications for Grades of California Redwood Lumber published by the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA).

    Heartwood Architectural Grades

The finest grades of redwood decking containing only heartwood. Featuring limited knots and other natural characteristics, typical grades including Heart Clear and Heart B. May be used on or near soil.

    Sapwood Architectural Grades

The finest grades of redwood decking containing a mix of heartwood and sapwood. Featuring limited knots and other natural characteristics, typical grades including Clear and B Grade. Specified for above-ground applications only.

    Heartwood Garden Grades

Economical redwood decking grades containing only heartwood. Featuring knots and other natural characteristics, typical grades include Selected Heart and Construction Heart. May be used on or near soil.

    Sapwood Garden Grades

  • Humboldt Redwood Fencing Keeps Up with Current Trends

Strength and versatility are key to Redwood fencing maintaining a strong value proposition year-after-year

SANTA ROSA, CA (March 26, 2019) – The popularity of outdoor living continues to lead to new and exciting design trends, even when it comes to the tried and true staple of backyards everywhere―the fence. Humboldt Redwood, the leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood fencing, explains why.

“As homeowners continue to look for new and innovative ways to create their own outdoor oasis, they are getting creative and incorporating design elements in unexpected ways,” says Jessica Hewitt, Director of Marketing. “A fence used to just be a fence. With the advent of social media platforms like Pinterest and Houzz, fences are getting lots of upgrades and becoming more integral to the overall aesthetic of outdoor spaces.”

    Fence Trends

One of the most popular fence trends are fence boards laid out horizontally instead of vertically. Horizontal fences present clean lines and a modern aesthetic, popular with today’s homeowners. What doesn’t work in horizontal fences? Sagging fence boards that bow between posts. For that reason, non-structural materials like plastics and composites do not perform well in horizontal fence applications. Only a naturally strong and dimensionally stable material, like Humboldt Redwood, should be used to achieve this popular fence style.

Another popular trend is fence planters, built as part of the fence itself. For homes on small lots with limited outdoor space, fence planters are a good use of vertical space, leaving valuable room for patio furniture, a barbeque, or hot tub. Because Humboldt Redwood is 100% natural and non-toxic, it is completely safe to use for fence planters where vegetables or herbs will be grown.

Use of non-traditional fencing materials offers another increasingly popular design trend. Corrugated tin, frosted glass, and laser cut metal, among others, can all be used for fence panels framed by either metal or wood posts and rails. With availability in 6-inch, 8-inch, and even larger sizes, Humboldt Redwood posts (and rails) can easily accommodate decorative fence panels constructed from these types of materials.

All the above-mentioned trends rely on a durable and versatile fence material that can be easily cut, sawed, drilled, or nailed to achieve a unique fence design. Humboldt Redwood fits the bill across the board. In addition, unlike man-made materials, Humboldt Redwood is a renewable resource from well-managed timberlands certified to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C013133).

    Redwood Fence Grades

Redwood fencing is typically offered in heartwood and sapwood grades. Durable heartwood grades, including Heart B, Construction Heart, and Merchantable Heart, are naturally resistant to termites and decay. Economical sapwood grades, such as B Grade, Construction Common, and Merchantable Common, are used for above ground applications not on or near the soil. Many homeowners elect to use sapwood grades for fence pickets or panels while choosing durable heartwood grades for posts and rails.

    Product Availability

Humboldt Redwood offers excellent availability of fencing products, including pickets, panels, posts, rails, and accessories. Humboldt Redwood products are available at independent lumber yards and home improvement retailers throughout California. Architects, builders, contractors, and developers specifying projects with redwood fencing are encouraged to contact a Humboldt Redwood dealer. • Humboldt Redwood Brings Beauty and Strength to Timber Frame Designs

Redwood and Douglas-fir timbers are ideal for many structural applications

SANTA ROSA, CA (March 26, 2019) – Humboldt Redwood, a leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood and Douglas-fir lumber, offers naturally strong, beautiful, and environmentally friendly redwood and Douglas-fir timbers that work for just about every structural building need.

“The use of redwood or Douglas-fir timbers for timber framing and exposed beam construction can produce dramatic results while lending the natural beauty and strength of wood to any building project,” says Jessica Hewitt, Director of Marketing. “Our redwood timbers are perfect for outdoor shade structures and pergolas. Our Douglas-fir timbers possess the strength and span capability for interior applications like posts and beams.”

    Redwood Timbers

Redwood is a unique choice for timbers as it is one of the lightest, yet strongest, North American softwoods, making it ideal for a wide range of applications where large timbers are required. Redwood is a renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable material that provides environmental advantages over alternative building materials.

There are many applications where redwood timbers work well, including shade structures, gazebos, pergolas, arbors, and even barns.  Redwood timbers also make beautiful interior design elements when used in exposed frame construction such as headers, rafters, posts, and beams.

Redwood timbers can be used in building applications where other wood species, particularly Western Red Cedar, have traditionally been used. Even though redwood and cedar have many similarities, there are significant differences that set the two apart. Redwood is a unique, deep red color and it is more than 30 percent stronger than Western Red Cedar. Redwood mills grade to Redwood Inspection Service (RIS) grade rules, which is exclusively authorized by the American Lumber Standard Committee, Inc. (ALSC) to formulate grading rules for redwood lumber. Western Red Cedar producers often have proprietary grades that are difficult to compare from mill-to-mill.

    Douglas-fir Timbers

Douglas-fir timbers feature excellent span and structural design values for exposed beams, framing, headers, rafters, and timber frame construction projects. They may be used extensively in new construction and remodeling projects in a variety of applications. Douglas-fir timbers readily accept paints and stains extremely well. The American Wood Council recognizes heavy timber construction as fire resistive. Architects and designers may reference Design for Code Acceptance 2: Design of Fire-Resistive Exposed Wood Members, which is available to download free on the American Wood Council website.

    Product Availability

Redwood and Douglas-fir timbers from Humboldt Redwood are available in 6-inch and larger sizes, in lengths up to 24 feet. 3-inch and 4-inch dimension available as well. Free of heart center (FOHC) timbers available by special order. Architects, builders, contractors, and developers specifying projects with solid sawn redwood and Douglas-fir timbers are encouraged to contact a Humboldt Redwood dealer. Solid sawn uppers considered cream of the crop

SANTA ROSA, CA (March 26, 2019) – Solid sawn lumber upper grades are the cream of the crop. Featuring limited knots and other natural characteristics, upper grades are often preferred by specifiers for their unblemished beauty. Humboldt Redwood, the leading manufacturer and distributor of redwood uppers, elaborates.

“Architects specifying natural wood generally prefer upper grades,” says Jessica Hewitt, Director of Marketing. “The aesthetics generally win out, especially for high-end projects where budgets allow for premium materials.”

Humboldt Redwood uppers are high value, appearance products for finishing applications including high-end decking, fascia, millwork, paneling, siding, trim, and wainscoting.

    Redwood Upper Grades

Redwood upper grades feature limited knots and other natural characteristics. Heartwood upper grades include Heart Clear and Heart B. Redwood heartwood is naturally resistant to termites and decay and features the dark, red hue that gives redwood its name. Sapwood upper grades include Clear and B Grade. Sapwood grades feature the darker heartwood as well as some of the lighter sapwood. The beauty of redwood sapwood upper grades cannot be underestimated as the variegation in tone can be particularly striking.

    Performance Under Fire Exposure

The superior performance of redwood under fire exposure has been known for decades. Testing by numerous laboratories in response to strict standards for decking and siding material in California has reaffirmed redwood as a fire safe material. Redwood achieves Class B flame spread in accordance with ASTM E-84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. Materials achieving Class B flame spread can be used safely and without restriction throughout all areas of California as defined in California Building Code Chapter 7A, Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure.
