Wildfire Prepared Demo

Anaheim, California – June 10, 2025

Researchers from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) in conjunction with the California Building Industry Association (CBIA) conducted a live wildfire demonstration during CBIA’s annual Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC 2025).

Approximately 200 building industry, insurance and fire safety professionals and others watched how a system of science-based mitigations can meaningfully reduce a home’s wildfire risk.

Zone 0

The mitigated structure showed the protection provided by noncombustible building materials and a noncombustible five-foot buffer also known as Zone 0.

A noncombustible Zone 0 is critical to prevent ember attack, the leading cause of ignitions during wildfires and one of three key vulnerable areas identified and mitigated by IBHS’s Wildfire Prepared Home program.

PCBC 2025 Zone 0 Displays sponsored by The Home Depot illustrated the curb appeal of landscaping starting five feet away from structures.

Wildfire Resiliency Supporters

In 2024, KB Home Division President Steve Ruffner attended a live wildfire demonstration at PCBC. He was so inspired that—mid-build—he is turning a new community into the nation’s first Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood—Dixon Trail in Escondido, CA—a designation based on IBHS research.

That inspiration extended to KB Home being the exclusive builder sponsor of the Live Wildfire Demo at PCBC 2025.
