PCBC 2012: POWERED BY CONNECTION
 |
"PCBC is truly the pre-eminent housing event, and over the years it has been a great source of innovation, industry knowledge and some wonderful business relationships. In recent times, in response to the changing market and its new challenges, PCBC has found an even more purposeful role in Brookfield’s annual calendar. The event today is geared to a focused education of our team, provides a creative environment for new products and ideas, and enables key individuals in our industry the opportunity to brainstorm the future together." |

In any business sector, the single greatest factor separating great entrepreneurs and organizations from their competitors is the quality of their connections-the breadth, depth and diversity of the networks they build around themselves and their companies.
Consider a recent study of 700 Stanford Business School graduates who went on to start their own businesses. Most maintained a limited, tight, homogeneous network—birds of a feather flocking together. But a small subset had significantly expanded their circles. They actively sought out new interactions with people at different companies, from different backgrounds, who fed them new information and unexpected perspectives.
When the researchers analyzed the performance of these businesses, the results were astounding. Those with wider connections were three times more innovative—as measured by patents, trademarks and entering unexploited niches—than their narrower peers.
In an industry as complex and multifaceted as ours, in times as uncertain and tumultuous as these, quality connections take on even greater importance. I would argue, in fact, that our businesses' very survival hinges on them. This is not a time for insular thinking and bunker mentalities. We need to engage with the very best people, products, ideas and innovations in order to revitalize our struggling—but resilient—industry.
The PCBC 2012 show theme is "Powered by Connections." But, really, quality connections have been PCBC's hallmark for over 50 years. There are larger building industry events. But there are not any higher caliber events, drawing more influential builders, creating richer intersections of capital (human, intellectual and financial) anywhere in North America.
In 2012, in the midst of the deepest housing recession since World War II, PCBC is doubling down its investment in connections.
- PCBC is proud to announce our partnership with Leading Builders of America, whose membership includes 19 of the largest publicly and privately held homebuilders in the nation. LBA members will send teams of national and regional buyers to attend PCBC, and our organizations are working collaboratively to develop high-level educational programming.
- PCBC is launching a new Key Buyers Club, a program of collaborative learning, networking and product evaluation for purchasing teams from large volume builders. Services include a networking dinner, learning roundtables, and private meeting rooms for discussions with exhibitors.
- In response to the thriving multifamily housing market, PCBC is expanding the Multifamily Trends Conference (now in its eleventh year). Developed in partnership with Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, this already successful event will now offer two days of expert analysis, forecasting and best practices in for-rent and for-sale multifamily housing.
- PCBC is expanding its showcase of leading edge technologies, products and practices. The 2012 exhibit floor will feature over 8,000 square feet of newly designed pavilions exploring breakthrough solutions in energy, smart home technologies, green products, water conservation and outdoor living—plus tutorials and "ask the expert" sessions to help you implement these new advances.
- PCBC is expanding the popular Curator Led Tours. Each year we commission industry experts—prominent builders, architects and building scientists—to select the most innovative, problem-solving products on the exhibit floor. Curators then lead narrated tours to view those products and discuss their features with manufacturer representatives.
These are challenging times, and we must meet them with renewed bravery—with new ideas and approaches that ultimately lead to our industry's revitalization. We won't find those by staying siloed within our own companies.
We'll only find them by connecting with the very best. And, in housing, the very best gather at PCBC.
I look forward to seeing—to connecting with—you there.
